Disc Brake Pad Material Formulation & Noise Control Technology

Technical Research · Oct 2026 · 8 min read

At SAITE Friction Materials, we produce over 10 million brake units annually for commercial vehicles across 50+ countries. Our disc brake pad line — covering WVA 29087, 29165, 29126 and other heavy-duty part numbers — is engineered to meet ECE R90 and IATF 16949 standards. In this article, we share how our formulation team balances friction performance, wear life and NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) control.

1. The Three Pillars of Disc Pad Formulation

A modern commercial vehicle disc brake pad is not a single material — it is a composite of over 20 ingredients, each serving a specific function. Our R&D team at the Huangshi factory categorizes these into three groups:

Friction modifiers control the coefficient of friction across temperature ranges. We use a blend of graphite, cashew dust and metal sulfides to keep friction stable from -20°C to 500°C.

Reinforcing fibers provide mechanical strength. Our NAO (Non-Asbestos Organic) formulation uses aramid pulp, glass fiber and mineral wool — no asbestos, no copper above regulatory limits.

Fillers and abrasives tune wear rate and rotor friendliness. We balance calcium carbonate, barium sulfate and small amounts of zircon to avoid rotor scoring while maintaining consistent bite.

SAITE Advantage: Our predecessor was a joint venture with Denmark's Laurentz Corporation and the UK's Lucas Industries. This heritage means our formulation recipes are based on European OE technology, not cheap domestic imitations. Every batch goes through friction coefficient testing on our 1:1 dynamometer before leaving the factory.

2. Why Brake Noise Happens — and How We Prevent It

Brake squeal is the #1 complaint from fleet operators. It is not a sign of wear — it is a vibration phenomenon. When the pad and rotor vibrate at the same frequency (typically 2–16 kHz), the result is audible noise.

Our engineers address this at three levels:

Shim layer design: Every premium-series pad comes with a multi-layer rubber-steel shim bonded to the backing plate. The shim decouples vibration between pad and caliper, reducing noise by up to 15 dB compared to unshimmed pads.

Chamfer and slot geometry: We machine leading and trailing edge chamfers (typically 15°–30°) and add 1–2 vertical slots. This breaks up the pressure distribution pattern and prevents the "stick-slip" vibration that causes squeal.

Backing plate damping: For heavy-duty applications (WVA 29174 for Meritor Elsa 225), we add a constrained-layer damping sheet between the steel backing and the friction material. This is the same technology used on European OE pads.

3. Temperature Management: The Key to Long Life

Commercial vehicle brakes see extreme temperatures — a fully loaded truck descending a long grade can push pad surface temperatures above 400°C. At this point, the friction material can experience "fade" — a drop in friction coefficient that increases stopping distance.

Our formulation team has developed a ceramic-enhanced recipe for premium-series pads that maintains >0.35 μ friction coefficient even at 450°C. This is achieved by:

- Using high-temperature phenolic resin with cure cycle optimization (we run a 3-stage heat treatment at 150°C → 180°C → 220°C)

- Adding ceramic fibers that retain structural integrity at high temperatures

- Controlling porosity to allow gas and wear debris to escape

Field-Proven Performance: Our premium disc pads deliver 100,000–120,000 km service life on long-haul routes — nearly double the industry average of 60,000 km. Standard-series semi-metallic pads still deliver 70,000–90,000 km at a more accessible price point.

4. Quality Control: Every Batch Tested

We don't just test random samples — every production batch goes through:

- Friction coefficient testing (constant speed and inertia dynamometer)
- Wear rate measurement at 100°C, 200°C, 300°C and 400°C
- Shear strength test (bond between friction material and backing plate)
- Thickness, parallelism and visual inspection

This is why our pads carry ECE R90 certification and why distributors in Germany, Poland, Brazil and Australia reorder year after year.

5. Custom Formulation for Special Applications

Not every truck operates on a highway. Mining trucks in Chile, city buses in Egypt, trailer axles in Saudi Arabia — each duty cycle needs a different recipe. Our R&D team can tailor formulations for:

- Mining/extreme-duty: higher abrasion resistance, thicker backing plates
- Hot climate: enhanced high-temperature fade resistance
- Urban delivery: low dust, low noise for residential areas
- Private label: custom branding, packaging and formulation
